01 — Installation and First Start

2 min read Updated 15 July 2026

INCAZ is a desktop Python application. The simplest Windows path installs the project into an isolated virtual environment and creates shortcuts for INCAZ and the bundled demo ECU. Python 3.10 or later is required.

Windows installer path

  1. Install Python 3.10+ from python.org. During installation, enable Add python.exe to PATH.
  2. Download the INCAZ repository as ZIP or clone it with Git.
  3. Run installer\install.bat.
  4. Use the INCAZ shortcut to start the desktop application.
  5. For a hardware-free session, start the demo ECU shortcut before starting INCAZ.

Install with pip

pip install git+https://github.com/fupsrl/INCAZ.git
incaz

Install from source

git clone https://github.com/fupsrl/INCAZ.git
cd INCAZ
python -m venv .venv
.venv\Scripts\activate
pip install -e .[dev]
incaz

On Linux/macOS activation is normally source .venv/bin/activate. The development extra installs the test tooling as well as the application dependencies.

First-start checks

  • Start INCAZ and confirm the Database, Project, Experiment, Hardware, Measurement, Calibration, Flash, and Help menus are visible.
  • If the application does not launch from a terminal, run python -m incaz.app while the virtual environment is active and keep the resulting console output.
  • Use the Demo ECU walkthrough before connecting a real ECU. It confirms Python, GUI, XCP transport, A2L parsing, calibration, MF4, and flash features in one repeatable setup.

Dependencies at a glance

Component Role in INCAZ
PySide6 + pyqtgraph Desktop GUI, MDI experiment workspace, tables and oscilloscope rendering.
pyxcp XCP master communication over Ethernet.
asammdf ASAM MDF 4.10 / MF4 recording writer.
intelhex Intel HEX data-set import and memory-image handling.
numpy Numeric sample storage and MF4 signal export.

Keep application data separate from the installation

Create calibration databases in a dedicated project/data location. The database stores copied A2L and HEX files plus SQLite metadata, so it remains a portable working record even when the original imported file is moved.
